An Introduction to Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
What is cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is all about securing technology and processes - making sure that the software, hardware, and networks that run the world do exactly what they need to do and can't be abused by bad actors.
The CIA triad is a concept used to explain the three goals of cybersecurity. The pieces are:
Confidentiality: ensuring that information is kept secret, so it can only be viewed by the people who are allowed to do so. This involves encrypting data, requiring authentication before viewing data, and more.
Integrity: ensuring that information is trustworthy and cannot be tampered with. For example, this involves making sure that no one changes the contents of the file you're trying to download or intercepts your text messages.
Availability: ensuring that the services you need are there when you need them. Blocking every single person from accessing a piece of valuable information would be secure, but completely unusable, so we have to think about availability. This can also mean blocking DDoS attacks or fixing flaws in software that cause crashes or service issues.
What are some specializations within cybersecurity? What do cybersecurity professionals do?
incident response
digital forensics (often combined with incident response in the acronym DFIR)
reverse engineering
cryptography
governance/compliance/risk management
penetration testing/ethical hacking
vulnerability research/bug bounty
threat intelligence
cloud security
industrial/IoT security, often called Operational Technology (OT)
security engineering/writing code for cybersecurity tools (this is what I do!)
and more!
Where do cybersecurity professionals work?
I view the industry in three big chunks: vendors, everyday companies (for lack of a better term), and government. It's more complicated than that, but it helps.
Vendors make and sell security tools or services to other companies. Some examples are Crowdstrike, Cisco, Microsoft, Palo Alto, EY, etc. Vendors can be giant multinational corporations or small startups. Security tools can include software and hardware, while services can include consulting, technical support, or incident response or digital forensics services. Some companies are Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), which means that they serve as the security team for many other (often small) businesses.
Everyday companies include everyone from giant companies like Coca-Cola to the mom and pop shop down the street. Every company is a tech company now, and someone has to be in charge of securing things. Some businesses will have their own internal security teams that respond to incidents. Many companies buy tools provided by vendors like the ones above, and someone has to manage them. Small companies with small tech departments might dump all cybersecurity responsibilities on the IT team (or outsource things to a MSSP), or larger ones may have a dedicated security staff.
Government cybersecurity work can involve a lot of things, from securing the local water supply to working for the big three letter agencies. In the U.S. at least, there are also a lot of government contractors, who are their own individual companies but the vast majority of what they do is for the government. MITRE is one example, and the federal research labs and some university-affiliated labs are an extension of this. Government work and military contractor work are where geopolitics and ethics come into play most clearly, so just… be mindful.
What do academics in cybersecurity research?
A wide variety of things! You can get a good idea by browsing the papers from the ACM's Computer and Communications Security Conference. Some of the big research areas that I'm aware of are:
cryptography & post-quantum cryptography
machine learning model security & alignment
formal proofs of a program & programming language security
security & privacy
security of network protocols
vulnerability research & developing new attack vectors
Cybersecurity seems niche at first, but it actually covers a huge range of topics all across technology and policy. It's vital to running the world today, and I'm obviously biased but I think it's a fascinating topic to learn about. Oh gawd, it’s all unravelling!! I’ve resorted to asking my ChatGPT for advice on how to handle this!! This is the context I put it:
work in a small startup with 7 other people
I have been brought on for a three month contract to assess the current product and make recommendations for product strategy, product roadmap, improved engineering and product processes with a view to rebuilding the platform with a new product and migrating existing vendors and borrowers across
There is one engineer and no-one else in the company has any product or technical experience
The engineer has worked on his own for 6 years on the product with no other engineering or product person
He does all coding, testing, development, devops tasks
He also helps with customer support enquires
He was not involved in the process of bringing me onboard and felt blindsided by my arrival
I have requested access to Github, and his response was:
As you can imagine access to the source code is pretty sensitive. Are you looking for something specifically? And do you plan on downloading the source code or sharing with anyone else?
He then advised they only pay for a single seat
I have spoken with the Chief Operations Officer who I report to in the contract and advised my business risk concerns around single point of failure
I have still not been granted access to Github so brought it up again today with the COO, who said he had requested 2 weeks ago
The COO then requested on Asana that the engineer add myself and himself as Github users
I received the following from the engineer:
Hey can you please send me your use cases for your access to GitHub? How exactly are you going to use your access to the source code?
My response:
Hey! My request isn’t about making changes to the codebase myself but ensuring that Steward isn’t reliant on a single person for access.
Here are the key reasons I need GitHub access:
1 Business Continuity & Risk Management – If anything happens to you (whether you’re on holiday, sick, or god forbid, get hit by a bus!!), we need someone else with access to ensure the platform remains operational. Right now, Steward has a single point of failure, which is a pretty big risk.
2 Product Oversight & Documentation – As Head of Product, I need visibility into the codebase to understand technical limitations, dependencies, and opportunities at a broad level. This DOESN'T mean I’ll be writing code, but I need to see how things are structured to better inform product decisions and prioritization.
3 Facilitating Future Hiring – If we bring in additional engineers or external contractors, we need a structured process for managing access. It shouldn't be on just one person to approve or manage this.
Super happy to discuss any concerns you have, but this is ultimately a business-level decision to ensure Steward isn’t putting itself at risk.
His response was:
1&3 Bridget has user management access for those reasons
2. no one told me you were Head of Product already, which isn’t surprising. But congrats! So will you be sharing the source code with other engineers for benchmarking?
The software engineer is an introvert and while not rude is helpful without volunteering inflation
He is also the single access for AWS, Sentry, Persona (which does our KYC checks).
I already had a conversation with him as I felt something was amiss in the first week. This was when he identified that he had been "blindsided" by my arrival, felt his code and work was being audited. I explained that it had been a really long process to get the contract (18 months), also that I have a rare mix of skills (agtech, fintech, product) that is unusually suited to Steward. I was not here to tell him what to do but to work with him, my role to setup the strategy and where we need to go with the product and why, and then work with him to come up with the best solution and he will build it. I stressed I am not an engineer and do not code.
I have raised some concerns with the COO and he seems to share some of the misgivings, I sense some personality differences, there seems like there are some undercurrents that were there before I started.
I have since messaged him with a gentler more collaborative approach:
Hey, I’ve been thinking about GitHub access and wanted to float an idea, would it make sense for us to do a working session where you just walk me through the repo first? That way, I can get a sense of the structure without us having to rush any access changes or security decisions right away. Then, we can figure out what makes sense together. What do you think?
I’m keen to understand your perspective a bit more, can we chat about it tomorrow when you're back online? Is 4pm your time still good? I know you’ve got a lot on, so happy to be flexible.
I think I’ve fucked it up, I’m paranoid the COO is going to think I’m stirring up trouble and I’m going to miss out on this job. How to be firm yet engage with someone that potentially I’ll have to work closely with(he’s a prickly, hard to engage Frenchie, who’s lived in Aus and the US for years).

For years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been unraveling what it asserts is a scam perpetrated by agents of North Korea, which used fake companies employing real IT workers to funnel money back to the regime’s military.
An American company played a key role in creating shell companies used as part of the scheme, a WIRED review of public records shows. Elected officials are now contemplating addressing loopholes in business-registration law that the scheme exposed.
In May, Wyoming secretary of state Chuck Gray revoked the business licenses of three companies linked to the North Korean scam: Culture Box LLC, Next Nets LLC, and Blackish Tech LLC. Gray said his office made the decision after receiving information from the FBI and conducting an investigation.
“The communist, authoritarian Kim Jong Un regime has no place in Wyoming,” Gray said in a May press release.
The companies posed as legitimate operations where businesses could hire contract workers to perform IT solutions, complete with fake websites featuring smiling photos of apparent employees. The companies all had one thing in common: Their incorporation documents were filed by a company called Registered Agents Inc., which says its global headquarters is in Sheridan, Wyoming.
Registered Agents, which provides incorporation services in every US state, takes the practice of business privacy to the extreme, and regularly uses fake personae to file formation documents with state agencies, a WIRED investigation previously found.
Culture Box LLC, one of the companies that Gray and the FBI linked to North Korea, listed “Riley Park” as the name of a Registered Agents employee on documents submitted to the Wyoming secretary of state. Park, according to several former employees of Registered Agents, is a fake persona that the company regularly used to file incorporation documents.
In a statement provided to WIRED, Registered Agents wrote, “The Wyoming Secretary of State dissolved the entities and we initiated the 30-day process to resign as their agent in mid-May. Ours and Wyoming's processes to identify bad actors works. It strikes the best balance of individual privacy and business transparency supported by an entire ecosystem that cares about supporting entrepreneurs while rooting out the small percent of scammers.” The FBI’s St. Louis office, which led the investigation, did not respond to a request for comment.
The North Korean operation worked like this: Agents of the regime created fake companies purporting to be legitimate firms offering freelance IT services. Workers hired by North Koreans, or North Koreans themselves, would then perform legitimate contractor work, often using assumed identities.
In some instances, Americans would set up low-cost laptops with remote-access software, allowing North Korean workers to perform freelance IT work while appearing to use American IP addresses. The FBI referred to these Americans as “virtual assistants.”
The payments for the IT work were eventually funneled back to North Korea—where, the Department of Justice asserts, it was directed to the country’s Ministry of Defense and other agencies involved in WMD work. The scheme was so expansive that any company that hired freelance IT workers “more than likely” hired someone involved in the operation, according to FBI agent Jay Greenberg.
The shell companies created in Wyoming were used to hire virtual assistants and receive payments. “I discovered that North Korean IT workers create and use domain names and limited liability companies (LLCs) in furtherance of their fraudulent activity and to mask their true identities as North Koreans. The LLCs are used to recruit ‘Virtual Assistants’ who can receive and ship devices needed for the North Korean IT workers as well as recruit and employ software developers from countries such as Pakistan, India, and China,” an FBI agent wrote in a May affidavit. “These LLCs are often registered in the United States through business registry services and sometimes use the identities of individuals who had a previous relationship with North Korean IT workers.”
The affidavit alleges that money from North Korean workers was used to purchase domain names for the IT front companies, in violation of sanctions laws. The domains were purchased using “payment service providers” with accounts belonging to the Wyoming companies.
In response to a request for comment from WIRED, the Wyoming secretary of state’s office said that it has “increased the number of complete, in-person audits of commercial registered agents, resulting in several ongoing investigations, as well as the issuance of findings and orders.”
The secretary of state has offered proposals to the Wyoming state legislature “aimed at preventing fraud and abuse of corporate filings by commercial registered agents, as ways to strengthen the Wyoming secretary of state's administrative authority to dissolve business entities controlled by foreign adversaries,” said Joe Rubino, the chief policy officer and general counsel at the Wyoming Secretary of State's Office.

Anduril Is Helping The Air Force To Develop Its Loyal Wingman Drone
Anduril is one of five companies now working on the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, which is a top priority for the Air Force.

Defense contractor Anduril has formally announced that it is one of five companies working on the US Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) advanced drone program.

Anduril has become the first contractor to formally announce that it supporting the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft advanced uncrewed aircraft program. This comes as the service says this program is progressing slower than it would like due to budgetary issues and amid emerging concerns about the cost and capabilities of the future drones.
A brief press release Anduril put out today says it is one five vendors the Air Force has chosen to help develop its future Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). The service said last year that a number of companies were under contract to conduct CCA-related work, but declined to name any of them. Last month, Breaking Defense reported that Boeing, General Atomics, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman were the other four contractors working on the CCA program, citing anonymous sources. That story added that some of these companies could be eliminated in a down-select later this year.

When contacted for more information about exactly how it is now contributing to the CCA development effort, Anduril told The War Zone that it could not currently provide any more details "given sensitivities," which it did not elaborate on. We have also reached out to the Air Force for additional information.
Last year, Anduril did notably acquire small aviation firm Blue Force Technologies, which had been developing an advanced drone called Fury that has long seemed very much in line with the Air Force's CCA requirements. Anduril also produces Lattice, which it describes as an "artificial intelligence-enabled software platform that enables teams of autonomous systems to dynamically collaborate to achieve complex missions, under human supervision." This could also be very relevant to the CCA program.

The CCA program is presently focused on the development and acquisition of at least one type of advanced "loyal wingman"-esque drone with a high degree of autonomy. These uncrewed aircraft are expected initially to operate closely together with stealthy Air Force F-35A Joint Strike Fighters and the future crewed sixth-generation Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) combat jet. The drones could potentially operate together with other types of aircraft, including non-stealthy fourth-generation fighters and the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, or independently, in the future. CCA is another element of the larger NGAD family of programs, which also includes new weapons, sensors, networking and battle management suites, advanced jet engines, and more.
"We commend Secretary Kendall and the U.S. Air Force for their leadership and commitment to integrating new technologies into the force," Anduril said in its release today. "We are honored to be the only non-traditional defense company selected to be a part of the CCA program."
The specific mention of being a "non-traditional defense company" here is noteworthy. Large established defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, General Atomics, and Raytheon have largely dominated the discussion about CCA-relevant developments in recent years.

Anduril regularly highlights its position as a 'disruptor' in the U.S. defense industrial space and its novel developmental, production, and general business practices, as you can read more about here. The company has steadily expanded its portfolio, with focuses on artificial intelligence software and smaller drones, since its founding in 2017.
The Air Force has also been touting its efforts to make use of novel contracting and other processes to help accelerate the CCA program. Air Force Lt. Gen. Richard Moore, Jr, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Programs, spoke about this just yesterday at a public event hosted by the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) think tank in Washington, D.C.
"The thing about this that's innovative with CCAs, in particular, is the Secretary [of the Air Force Frank Kendall] asked us: 'Please don't go to industry and give them a requirement. The last thing in the world we want to do is tell them what to build. We want to go to them with questions and we want to find out what they can do. What is the art of the possible and what is it that they could provide? And let's allow the envelope to expand by not constraining it with a requirement," Moore said.
"I think what we're starting to see now is that there are a lot of thoughts out there, some of them ... not necessarily from the large defense primes [traditional prime contractors], that really will will be beyond what we would have conceived had we decided to write a requirement," Moore added. "So it is exciting to see what's coming. And I think the the way that this is innovative is something that will transition to other programs. I don't think that this is one and done, because I think that we're going to find it to be wildly successful."
Moore also specifically mentioned "non-traditional sources" supporting the CCA program that had emerged through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. SBIR is a U.S. government contracting mechanism that focuses on smaller deals with smaller companies to help foster technical innovation. The initial work on the Fury drone was through SBIR contracts.
All of this being said, the Air Force has made clear that it is not moving ahead with CCA as fast as it wants. The service has blamed this primarily on broader budgetary disputes between President Joe Biden's administration and Congress that are currently impacting the U.S. government as a whole. Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall has been particularly outspoken over the years about the problems that short-term spending packages, commonly called continuing resolutions (CR), rather than full annual budgets, impose on the U.S. military broadly.
"We're going to be limited in terms of forward progress based on the CR," Kristyn E. Jones, the senior official currently performing the duties of the Under Secretary of the Air Force, also said at yesterday's CSIS event, speaking alongside Lt. Gen. Moore. "CCA, as I mentioned – you know, we've made some progress being able to award contracts to some of the initial designers, but we can't ramp that."
The Air Force has said in the past that it wants to acquire at least 1,000 CCAs, and likely many more, and that it wants to begin major production of the drones within the next five years. At present, the expected cost of a single CCA is estimated to be around one quarter to one third of the unit price of an F-35 stealth fighter. This would put the price point for one of these future drones at between roughly $20.5 million and $27.5 million, based on public data about current F-35 unit prices.

The 1,000 CCA figured is based around a notional concept of operations involving a pair of the drones operating together with each of 200 NGAD combat jets and 300 F-35As. The Air Force has also previously said that a single crewed aircraft could oversee more CCAs in the future.
In addition, despite Moore's comments about the Air Force trying not to set firm requirements for the future CCAs, the service is clearly working to define several key parameters. From what has been disclosed so far, the CCA effort looks to be leaning toward designs with less range and higher performance than had previously been envisioned, and that will be at the high end of the expected unit cost range as a result. This, in turn, has already prompted Congress to voice concerns about the direction of the program.
The Air Force has made clear that the CCA program, however it might continue to evolve, is central to its future operational vision. The service sees the drones as especially critical for providing advanced capabilities in high volumes at a relatively low cost, a concept it currently refers to as "affordable mass." This kind of capacity is seen as particularly essential for success in any future high-end conflict, such as one against China in the Pacific.
In the meantime, much about the overall CCA program still seems to be in flux. The Air Force does now seem be working to coalesce the effort around a core group of contractors, including Anduril.

Wonderfully organized, well-constructed post! I spent so much time thinking about healthcare issues that the spirit moved me to reboot and expand on this. (Disclaimer: I spent a few hours writing and I fear I don’t have much edit left to energy, or something 😅)

Owning so many companies, with so many different services, allows UnitedHealth to profit from their own mishaps. We have laws against such monopolies, in theory, but these laws are useless without meaningful action. This played out recently (Feb 2024), during the Change Healthcare breach:

Providers who wanted to take their business elsewhere often found that it was useless—because some of the of the “competing” companies were also owned by United, and each insurance company decides which clearinghouses they will work with. Source? Me. I work in insurance billing and choosing vendors, configuring Clearinghouse software + assisting with electronic payment setup is something I frequently do for small group practices and solo providers. Several asked if they could avoid using Change and my answer was “no, Change is the only way to set up direct deposit with Anthem/Aetna/etc.”
(More venting below)
Every major insurance company needs a clearinghouse (otherwise we’d have to send all claims and payments via snail mail). Upon purchasing Change Healthcare, United Healthcare also obtained definitive information on what their competitors were paying for services, and how much of that cost was shared to the client in the form of a copay.
Providers aren’t allowed to share information about the rates they get but fuck that. My company can’t legally prevent me from telling coworkers my salary. Why does insurance get to bully people like that? Especially when they are treating providers like company employees and not independent contractors, which is how they are classified and paid. Allegedly the gag rule was repealed in NY state recently, but I haven’t bothered to check because…….i find it really hard to care. One disgruntled millennial screaming into the tumblr void is absolutely nothing compared to what insurance companies have done, and will continue to do, to fuck with the markets. (Even if aforementioned millennial had been gifted with hyper focus by the Autism gods and subsists entirely on espresso and spite.)
But back to the non-payments…from the Change Hack and the denied claims and the everyday negligence that is endemic to health insurance companies.
Maybe they do pay out the money eventually—the denials are overturned, the data breach gets fixed (ish) and the money starts getting paid out again…. Here’s the thing, though. As long as that money is in the insurer’s bank account, they get interest on it—oftentimes compound interest because behemoth companies have leverage to demand things like that from their vendors. In many cases, interest is due to providers for mishandled / wrongfully denied claims, but they rarely pay it out. I have seen insurance companies systemically underpay claims for months. It takes me, on average, about a year to resolve and I spend about 10-15 hours on this per month. When the correction payments role in, they come in without interest and I’m too exhausted to bring it up. In my state (NY), the timeline for prompt pay is 45 days but the specifics are never clearly defined… and if you wanted to fight for this money, if you had to time to fight for this money, if you knew your rights and where to find them, you’d still have to complain to the state. Anyway the interest payment is like 2% and amounts to pennies per claim. It’s way less than insurance gets for holding the money (from what I understand, and I’m sure they’re cooking the books with all that surplus cash they’re hoarding. At the end of the day, cash is an asset.
Propublica has been doing incredible work on lack of/barriers to receiving mental health care (on all insurance companies, not just United), including their questionable “algorithm” and disproportionate claims denials—UnitedHealth is, quantitatively speaking, The Literal Worst.
Wikipedia lists several different legal cases ranging from compliance failures, to excessive lobbying, to racketeering, to SEC violations, to manipulating insurance rates, to buying previously independent research groups, to influencing high-profile healthcare economists to publish and present misleading research on who is to blame for high health care costs (the culprit is everyone except for United, according to the researches hired by United) but what stands out to me is the Medicare overbilling:

You are defrauding the fucking government. You know the one that’s been tasked with enforcing the rule of law? How much gaul do you think that takes? “We will systemically defraud a government program that is highly popular with one of the most active voter blocks, confident that whatever happens, we will turn out fine.”
And it did turn out fine. The government didn’t fire them. United still offers Medicare Advantage plans. For the love of god, why??
All of this is gross, disgusting, infuriating and unfair. In my honest opinion, as someone who spent more time on the phone with insurance than anyone I know and love, I am begging you to consider a different takeaway:
- UnitedHealth is winning at capitalism, and capitalism is the system we are in. When I look at all this, my writer brain thinks “I could not come up with a better supervillain.” My business + econ brain things, “yeah, these are common strategies most companies take”… granted, companies do not normally try all these strategies at once, but United is big so they can.
- UnitedHealth can afford major fuckups. A lawsuit, a settlement, etc—it’s just cost of doing business for them. They’ve probably done the math and decided “yeah, the potential loss is much less than the possible gain here. Hold onto your hats and RELEASE THE ALGORITHM.”
- UnitedHealth cares little for bad press. What else are you gonna do, find another healthcare company? This is America, we really only have five. Most people have coverage through their employer so it’s not like you get a say. Capitalism gonna capitalism—your company will favor whatever costs coverage the least. The Amazons and Microsofts of the world have some bargaining leverage, but most companies don’t. Most companies won’t consider the cost of time spent dealing with a shitty insurance company, because that is an expense they passed on to you, dear worker.
- This happened because we let it. By “we”, I mean our government, our regulators. I don’t think the average citizen is culpable, but we do have influence.
…From my own anecdotal experience, I remember how strongly some people felt about the Affordable Care Act. I wouldn’t argue with them—that never works—but I would casually mention “well I have a pre-existing condition (depression), and when I sought treatment as a teen in the early Aughts, my parents (both social workers with private practices of their own) opted to pay full fee out of pocket because they worried I would never, ever get insurance coverage if the fact I sought treatment for depression ever appeared in my medical history. This new legislation saves me about a hundred dollars a week for the rest of my life, basically**.” because insurance can’t do that anymore, not since the ACA. (**ymmv, based on your deductible, but I won’t get into that right now.)
Anyway. If my first ACA comment went over well, I might add “I also enjoy not paying more for health insurance simply because I have a uterus and therefore might become pregnant some day, which is exceptionally frustrating because the same company will not cover my birth control or at least acknowledge that an unborn is very much like a parasite, or that giving birth is the most medically expensive thing you can do. There’s a risk I could die and/or my baby could die, if all parties survive the childbirth, the aforementioned offspring will most likely become a dependent on my health insurance plan, and that’s one more human that you’ll have to go through the trouble of denying claims for. That kind of labor doesn’t grow on trees!” This also changed (mostly) because of the ACA.
But my point is this. If privatized healthcare becomes as unpopular as universal health care once was, it might have a fighting shot under some administration (probably not this one, honestly)… if enough people make a fuss, and enough people come to see all the gaslighting that went into making us hate it in the first place.
Original Medicare is socialized health care. People like original Medicare. I don’t really work with it, but I’ve heard from other billers that it is straightforward and (relatively) easy to deal with, especially in light of the ceaseless industry horrors we’ve all come to accept. The few times that Medicare has come up, everyone is easy to talk to, friendly, and they’re all on shore—which is more expensive on paper but most cost efficient for me because they always know what they are talking about. If I work less, I can use those same billable hours doing more productive things like helping to grow the practice, improving office operations, or helping clients fight dumb claims denials.
We are the only industrialized country in the world that does not have Universal Healthcare. Maybe there are some industrialized counties in outer space that we have yet to discover. Idk. anything’s possible, but it wont change my argument. United Health care is the 9th largest company by revenue. The bulk of their business is in one country (US), with a healthcare system that looks radically different from all other industrialized companies. How the hell is that even possible?

When I learned about the death of Brian Thompson, I was not surprised to learn that health executives frequently face death threats. I do my best to exercise compassion in all circumstances but I did not find it readily accessible, here. You are literally killing people. Why are you surprised to learn that countless people believe that you too belong amongst the dead? In the words of my wonderful, talented friend John Minus: “if people are largely indifferent/enthused by your death, maybe you fucked up. That’s just science.”
The gremlin in me wants to argue that the money spent not denying so many goddamn claims could be offset by the costs of not having to worry about getting getting murdered but I just really, really want people to understand that it is so much worse than what you think. Evil innovates, just as capitalism intended. People are getting paid unfathomable amounts of money to visualize and execute more heinous schemes than the average salt-of-the-earth human could ever hope to imagine.
